Custom Glass Etching Replaced “Like It Never Even Happened”

Have you ever wondered what you would do if your custom glass etching needed to be replaced? If an etched glass door, sidelight or window that is part of a scene were to break, that glass needs to be replaced with the original artwork. This becomes extremely important if it needs to match or coordinate with another door or window. Would you be able to find the original glass artist and if you know who it is, are they even still in business?

It’s a story we hear frequently at Krystal Glass Company. A customer calls to have a custom glass etching replaced with new glass. Broken etched glass doors or sidelights due to a rock or other object breaking the glass are common. Many doors, windows and sidelights in entryways are etched with artwork that carries from one glass panel to the others. Some glass entryways contain two doors with etched glass mirror images of each other. Each time we encounter a project like this, glass artist Peter Edward comes to the rescue to repair the entryway like it never even happened.

“I am completely in awe of Pete’s work, and of how quickly he did it. My husband and I are both thrilled,” Germaine said. “I can’t get over how perfect it looks. Like it never even happened!”

When one glass panel breaks and needs to be replaced, the first step is having a new piece of glass custom made to fit the space exact. Next the custom glass etching replacement must be done carefully to match the rest of the design. This is the tricky part. Many homeowners like Germaine (pictured) and her husband do not know where to turn because they bought their homes with etched glass doors already in place, and they don’t know who the glass artist was. It is very important to select a talented and experienced glass artist to reproduce the artwork. If the result looks terrible, the glass will have to be replaced again which is a costly and time consuming problem. Glass etching is a permanent design applied with a light abrasive sand blasting process. It cannot be erased or etched over if a mistake is made.

When Germaine called to see if we could help we asked her for a picture of the entryway so we could see the custom glass etching that needed to be replaced. The sidelight on the right was broken. The artwork was elaborate with tropical palms, sky and clouds, a land mass off in the distance, and a water line of ocean at a specific height with jumping dolphin.

Because of the complexity of the design, Peter Edward chose to do the etched glass sidelight at the South Broward home so that all the elements of the design would line up with the original three pieces of glass that were still intact.

During the one-day glass etching process he arrived at the home with his mobile glass etching unit. The broken tempered glass was cracked into a spiderweb of small pieces, but Peter Edward was able to see the design enough to duplicate it precisely on the new piece of glass that he had fabricated and tempered at a local glass factory. He etched the glass door sidelight in an area of the home’s exterior. Then he removed all the broken glass and set the new custom etched glass replacement in the opening using the existing wood frame molding to hold it in place.
